The State Government has given its preliminary view on a controversial project planned for north of Bundaberg.
WA mining company Fox Resources has made a mineral development licence application (MDL 3040).
The licence would be for exploratory work with the potential for a coking coal mine in the future.
Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has assumed responsibility for assessing the application to address a potential conflict of interest of the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development Dale Last.
The Attorney-General’s preliminary view is that the application is not in the public interest.
The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing, and Regional and Rural Development is preparing a decision brief for consideration by the Attorney-General.
It’s unknown when a final decision will be made.
The previous Labor Government first rejected the company’s application in 2022. That decision was overturned the following year.
Then in 2024, it was ruled once again not to be in the public’s interest.
Fox Resources says it would seek advice and is continuing to consult with our community.
