The Australian Heritage Festival is back next month and Bundy is joining in the celebrations.

This year’s theme is ‘unearthed’ and events will be happening from April 18 to May 18.

Councillor John Learmonth says the festival is a chance to celebrate the region’s rich history.

“From the heritage streetscapes of Bundaberg and Childers to the pioneer history of Gin Gin and surrounds, the region has a wealth of historical interest,” Cr Learmonth says.

“As part of Council’s heritage festival activities, visitors will have the opportunity to see inside unique and interesting buildings usually closed to the general public.

“There are also some wonderful community groups with activities planned around the region that are well worth checking out.”

There will be guided tours at the School of Arts, Fairymead House, Bundaberg’s Masonic Building and the North Railway Museum throughout the month.

To help attendees plan their visits, Council and community events are listed on the Australian Heritage Festival website.

Childers will be holding a special heritage day on Saturday May 10 with activities happening at 16 sites across the town.

Committee publicity officer Desley Cowley says the entire town is involved under the theme ‘preserving the past for the future’.

“There are two walking tours, one’s a military walking tour, and one is the one that Scott does, he’s our president, and he starts at the pharmacy and does a walk around most of the buildings that are participating,” Desley says.

“[We hope visitors get] a bit of a combination of learning about the history, but also just being part of the community and getting involved.”

Desley says the group is keen for more people to get involved on the day as volunteers.

“What we would like to do is find people that like telling stories or just to help guide people around the town.

“And if there’s anyone sort of thinking, well, they don’t want to commit to a long term volunteer role but would like to come and see what a bunch of lovely people we all are, that’s a perfect time to come for a one-off event.”
