A feature of the new Bundaberg Hospital’s emergency department (ED) design is the inclusion of a dedicated medical imaging suite, fully equipped with state-of-the-art x-ray and ultrasound machines, as well as a computed tomography (CT) scanner.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said the integrated medical imaging suite would be a game-changer for emergency care.

“By embedding state-of-the-art imaging technology within the ED, we’ll be able to diagnose patients more efficiently, expedite their care and treatment and enhance their experience,” Ms Carroll said.

“The suite is strategically located near the resuscitation bays, ensuring rapid access to imaging for our most critically unwell patients – whether they are suffering from trauma, stroke, heart attack or other time-sensitive emergencies, where every second counts.

“The emergency imaging suite will provide valuable learning opportunities for current staff, offering exposure to cutting-edge imaging technologies that can enhance their skills and job satisfaction.

“Future students will also benefit by gaining valuable, hands-on exposure to diagnostic imaging in real-time, allowing them to learn in urgent care cases where imaging plays a critical role.”

Acting Bundaberg Hospital Director of Medical Imaging Jodie Giese said the addition of a satellite imaging suite in the new hospital’s ED was one of the features her team was most excited about.

“It will allow for immediate access to emergency diagnostic imaging—whether it’s x-ray, ultrasound, or CT – without the need to transfer patients to another part of the hospital,” Ms Giese said.

“Moving patients, particularly those in severe pain or distress, from the ED to our imaging department can be uncomfortable and time-consuming, so minimising this step will enhance their overall experience.

“By consolidating imaging services within the ED, we’ll streamline workflows, allowing nurses and support staff to focus on patient care rather than patient transport, which ultimately leads to more efficient use of resources and a smoother patient journey.

“Embedding imaging professionals within the ED will also foster closer collaboration between ED doctors, and radiologists, allowing for faster consultations and quicker decision-making.”
