A new police operation is underway following a horror month on our roads.
The Wide Bay Burnett district continues to be one of the leading districts in the state for fatal traffic crashes, with 27 of the 285 lives lost on the roads this year.
In November alone, five lives were lost on roads within the Bundaberg Patrol Group.
Operation Corridor has been launched in response and will continue until the end of January 2025.
The operation will focus on high visibility traffic enforcement across the Bundaberg region targeting the education and enforcement of the Fatal Five.
Local officers will be out in force, supported by the district’s Tactical Crime Squad and the State Road Policing Task Force.
Bundaberg Patrol Group Chief Inspector Grant Marcus said each life lost is a tragedy.
“Enough is enough – we cannot see any more people being injured or killed on our roads,” he said.
“Through high visibility policing across the Bundaberg region, our aim is to alter driver behaviour and improve road safety.
With both education and enforcement aspects, police will be focusing on the proven causes of traffic crashes including speed, impaired driving, fatigue, seat belt use, driver distraction and vehicle safety standards.
“We don’t want anyone to be missing a loved one this Christmas season.
“We do not take this lightly so you can expect to see police out in force.
“As we move into school holidays and the Christmas season, we know many people will be traveling through the region, so with increased traffic volumes on our roads, I sincerely urge you to be aware of the causes of traffic crashes and do everything you can to avoid them.
“Let’s work together to make our roads a safer place for all.”
