The highest number of turtles in 50 years has been recorded along our region’s coastline this nesting season.

More than 2000 clutches of eggs were laid across the region and around 520 turtles nested at Mon Repos alone.

Ranger in charge Cathy Gatley says it has been the best year for Loggerheads in 50 years.

“In total we had a bit over 2000 clutches of eggs and then for our Loggerheads they usually lay on average 127 eggs in a clutch so you’re talking over 200,000 eggs incubating along the coast with the majority of those here at Mon Repos,” she says.

Ms Gatley adds there were some returning visitors to our beaches.

“We had quite a few old girls that did come ashore so we had a turtle whose tag number, or name, is T73605 and she was first tagged in 1993 in her first breeding season,” she says.
