The 2024 Emmy nominations were announced on Wednesday and brought record-setting recognition for two standout series: FX’s The Bear and Shogun. The Bear, a series centred on a family restaurant in Chicago, made a historic mark with 23 comedy nominations. This includes nods for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor for Jeremy Allen White, who plays the head chef, both categories in which the show triumphed last year. Ayo Edebiri received a nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy, advancing from her previous win for Best Supporting Actress. Notably, guest acting nominations saw the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis and Olivia Colman among the recognized talents.

In the drama category, Shogun emerged as the frontrunner with 25 nominations. With last year’s top contenders like Succession, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us absent, Shogun climbed to prominence. Significant nominations for the show include Best Drama Series, Best Actress for Anna Sawai, and Best Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada. The series, based on James Clavell’s novel about 17th-century Japan, was initially intended to be a limited series but has since expanded its scope.

Canadian stars also shone brightly among the nominees. Martin Short received a nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Only Murders in the Building, pitting him against fellow Canadian D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai of Reservation Dogs. Ryan Gosling was also recognized with a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his hosting of Saturday Night Live.
